The Remora is sometimes referred to as the Remora Shark however it is not a shark at all. These unusual fish have a flat head with an elongated gray body separated by a lateral white band followed by a gray band; the underside is all white. The pectoral fins stay mostly upright and stationary and occasionally are used for rudders when these fish swim.
The Remora has a suction disk located on the top of its head used for attaching to sharks. They not only get a free ride around the ocean, they get free food as well, but are not parasites on the shark.
The Remora is a greedy eater and will eat most all foods. It should be kept with other aggressive eaters such as other remoras, groupers, lionfish, and large angelfish in a 300 gallon tank or larger. The remora will quickly outgrow all tank mates and be the top predator in the tank. Despite their bad reputation the remora can be hand fed and spends most of the time relaxing on the bottom of the tank when it’s not feeding. Have lots of good water movement and open swimming area on the bottom of the tank with a sandy bottom to prevent scratches on its soft skin. Invertebrates and very small fish are not safe with the remora.
The Remora will eat all foods whole so it is important to feed your remora pieces of food according to what it can swallow for its size. To ensure proper feeding, use a feeding stick.
